During the last years we have seen an increasing interest in sangre de drago products worldwide. Interest in sangre de drago is beneficial as it allows the indigenous people of the Amazon to literally tap a sustainable resource. At the same time, to avoid mass destruction and possible extinction of the species, sangre de drago must be protected and monitored.

Our concern about the indiscriminate cutting of sangre de drago trees prompted us to develop and establish reliable sources of the sap. We now work with several native groups to whom our botanists, teach proper ways of harvesting, collecting, and replanting sangre de drago trees. In addition, we have established small but promising sangre de drago plantations, from which we plan to collect sap in the near future. All these activities would not be possible without a skilled botanist with an intimate knowledge of these trees and the indigenous people on whose lands they grow. Cesar Grandes, our chief botanist, is in charge of supervising and conducting all our activities with sangre de drago. Cesar Grandes is a professor at the Universidad Amazonica del Peru, former Director of the Herbarium Amazonense, Iquitos, Peru, and a lecturer on rain forest flora.
